Description
Exterior Edit Mode allows a player the ability to add components that occupy spaces on the exterior of ships, some for form, others for function. Building the interior of your ship will generate a rough exterior shape of your ship. Using this edit mode will allow you to add the following types of things to the exterior of your ship:
- Armor blocks (various shapes)
- Container tiles (appearance)
- Engines * (main propulsion)
- Sensors (mineral sensing)
- Power (solar modules)
- Thruster (maneuvering)
- Industrial (appearance)
(* The largest engine is installed via Interior edit mode)
You may find that completing the exterior design of the ship, is best accomplished after you have completed the interior layout of the ship. Any internal layout changes can have a significant impact on the external appearance of the ship, as any internal space, will be wrapped in a one tile thick external armor. Some internal design choices may make some functional blocks which require external access unavailable. For example, you may have a Salvage Unit on the outer skin of your ship; if you extend the deck above the Salvage Unit by one tile, it would no longer be able to reach space, and the editor will remove it automatically.
There are a variety of blocks to choose from, and the groups conform to increasing size dimensions (111 is 1 long x 1 wide x 1 deep, 211 is 2x1x1 et al). There are also three groups of functional blocks, industrial, power and thruster. Many of the blocks have 'mirror' copies when reversal is not possible and they are named as such. You can rotate the blocks using the arrow keys on your keyboard. The left and right arrow keys will spin or yaw the block, while the up and down keys will roll or pitch the block. Your current camera view has an impact on which axis' the block rotates; changing the camera position may simplify the desired rotation and placement of the block you are working with.
