Description

Uses a Chipset to drain, repair or boost firewalls of your ship, or enemy ships and stations. Provides 8 chipset slots. This unit can provide protection from attacks, launch attacks against other ships and stations, or speed the recovery of systems that have been hacked. Your ship firewalls appear on the left screen and available targets or connected target firewalls appear on the right screen. The suite's lights flash and sound fx play when one or more chipsets are active.

Usage

To insert a Chipset, approach the far right side of the unit and you will see a slot to install the chipset. Once installed, you can enable/disable that chipset, remove its effect from a targeted firewall or eject the chipset from the unit. On the right hand screen, select a target, and note that the moment you choose the target, a network connection attempt begins, which may be seen as a hostile action by NPC ships or stations. Next you can choose which firewall you would like to apply an effect to, whether negative or positive. Select a firewall, then select one or more of your installed cartridges to apply the effects to that firewall. You can use more than one cartridge on a firewall as long as they are of different effect types (see Chipset). You will see the chipset icon next to the firewall and the effective strength of that firewall will begin to change. Green firewalls are secure, and any firewall that reaches zero turns red and means the system has been compromised or disabled. Note that chipsets have three varieties: Red - hack/offensive, Green - boost/defensive, and Blue - repair/recover. You can also boost your own firewalls or login to a friendly ship to assist them with boosting the strength of their firewalls or assist with recovery after an attack. To cancel the effect of a cartridge, you can click the icon under the effected firewall, or select the chipset and power it down.

Effects

Using this system offensively, you can cause any of the targeted systems to cease functioning for a short time. This can quickly cripple an otherwise powerful ship. For example, if the Weapons firewall is hacked, the target's offensive fire will cease, next the Engines could be attacked preventing escape, and finally an attack on the Access firewall would allow you to teleport aboard and open doors on the target ship! Using the offensive abilities of this system against an NPC station will have a significantly negative impact on your reputation with one or more of the Factions or Companies. This could make fueling, resupply or trade difficult and even render them hostile towards your approach.
